Plumbing Installation Guidelines
Only an appropriately licensed plumber/drainer may install an H2grO unit and all work must be in accordance with AS/NZS 3500.2.
For the purpose of plumbing installation, an H2grO – Greywater for Gardens unit should be treated as a disconnector gully, located external to the building, supported on a 100mm thick concrete footing and backfilled as specified in AS/NZS 3500.2.
In new ‘slab-on-ground’ homes, the plumber/drainer will need to position the necessary sewage pipes and confirm gradients prior to pouring of the footings and floor slab.
In new high-set homes or in retro-fit installations, the sewage pipes can be positioned and the gradient checked at any suitable time.
The source of the greywater, which needs to be specified by the homeowner or designer before the installation. In most situations this will involve running separate pipes for different fixtures in the room. For example, in a bathroom the bath and shower may be connected to one pipe and flow to the H2grO diverter, while the basin, floor waste and toilet may be combined
and flow to the sewer.
The lid is fitted with a "pop-out grate" and may be used as an overflow relief gully (O.R.G) if it is located in accordance with plumbing requirements.
Step One
Where the unit is to be located in a path or paved area, the top of the H2grO cover shall be installed just above the finished height of the surrounding graded pavement, sufficient to prevent ponding and ingress of surface water. If not located in a path or paved area, a minimum height of 75mm shall be maintained between the top of the H2grO and the surrounding ground.

Step Two
To provide entry of the inlet pipe, the plumber makes a hole into the H2grO housing with a hole saw and installs a rubber grommet to make a waterproof seal. The inlet pipe may be positioned in either the back or side wall, opposite the diversion valve and above the filter screen. The height of the holes will be dependent on the position of the pipe and the fall required from the fixture. The hole size required is branded on each grommet.
Step Three
The inlet pipe(s) penetrates the H2grO housing through the rubber sealing grommet. To allow for easy removal of the filter screen the pipe(s) should extend into the H2grO by no more than 30 to 40mm.
Step Four
Connection of the moulded polyethylene H2grO housing to a trapped DN100 sewer drain is achieved with a 100mm Rubber Seal Adaptor.
Step Five
In high-set construction or where the charging water velocity is high, it is advisable to press fit a 90° bend to direct the greywater flow onto the filter screen. Press fitting the bend allows it to be easily taken off to make it easier to remove the screen and pump.
Hydraulic Specifications
Hydraulic Load
H2grO – Greywater for Gardens will accept a maximum hydraulic
loading of 30 fixture units as specified in AS/NZS 3500.2.
- Pump Data
Maximum pump operating head is 7 metres. Pump flow rate is
140Lpm at 2 metres head reducing to 0Lpm at 7 metres. Maximum pump operating temperature is 50°C.
Electrical Connections
Important! All electrical installation works must be undertaken by an appropriately licensed electrical contractor. Electrical wiring shall be in accordance with AS/NZS 3000.
H2grO – Greywater for Gardens is supplied fitted with electrical cables.
The manual model is supplied with:
- 2.5 metres of electrical supply cable (orange)
The automatic mode is supplied with:
- 2.5 metres of electrical supply cable (black)
- 1.5 metres of electrical control cable (white)
WARNINGS – Manual model
- A fuse is fitted within the electrical enclosure inside the H2grO housing. This fuse protects the pump. If the fuse fails, replace it with a 20x5mm, 6.3 Amp item. If replacement fuse blows, there could be a fault with the pump or power supply – DO NOT fit another fuse – have the unit serviced.
WARNINGS – Automatic model
- Short circuiting the red and black wire on the control cable will damage the electronic unit. BEFORE connecting system to mains supply, connect wiring to the Controller and Extra Room Switches (where fitted) and ensure they are properly wall-mounted. A heatshrink sheath is supplied on the (RED) wire on the control cable as protection until the wire is properly connected into an insulated terminal.
Electrical Specifications
- A fuse is fitted within the electrical enclosure inside the H2grO housing. This fuse protects the pump. If the fuse fails, replace it with a 20x5mm, 3.15 Amp fast blow type item. If replacement fuse blows, there could be a fault with the pump or power supply – DO NOT fit another fuse – have the unit serviced.

Automatic H2grO Only
a. 5-Position Valve
An electronically controlled 5-position valve is fitted into the H2grO housing. The valve is prewired, sealed and only serviceable as a complete unit. Opening of the valve will void warranty.
b. Electrical Enclosure
An electrical enclosure is fitted into the H2grO housing. The unit is prewired. A 20x5mm, 3.15 Amp "fast blow" fuse is fitted inside the enclosure to protect the pump. The enclosure is prewired, and only serviceable as a complete unit.
c. Controller
The controller is required to control the 5-position valve in the H2grO. The controller is supplied loose with each H2grO for fitting at a convenient location within the house. Security or irrigation control cable a minimum of 4 core x 0.5mm² must be used for this connection.
d. Extra Room Switch (Optional)
This switch is available as an option. This switch has to be connected to the controller and allows the owner to switch greywater between the garden and waste (sewer) from another location within the house. Security or irrigation control cable a minimum of 4 core x 0.5mm² must be used for this connection.
e. Rain / Moisture Sensor (Optional)
The H2grO has built-in circuity to allow connection a rain/moisture sensor. The senor needs to be connected (normally closed) with the contacts opening when rain or moisture is detected. The yellow and green wires on the control cable (supplied) are connected together and fitted with a heat shrink sleeve. Remove the sleeve, separate the wires and connect to a sensor with security or irrigation control cable a minimum of 2 core x 0.5mm².
